Chapter Thirty-Eight

The Tower Hotel

The rain ended just as Raoul entered his hotel room. He didn’t like what he saw. Another letter lay on the desk next to the letter from Princess Juliana. He snatched up the second letter. It was from Angelique.

“Raoul, I just returned from Hindlip House where investigators were searching for the priests from Rome. I came here hoping to find you. Instead I found the letter from Princess Juliana asking you to rush home to be married. I feel like a fool. You talked of love to me and refused to go with me to Fiji. I thought you were being practical although now I understand you couldn’t because you were already pledged to marry Berta. Love has no place in our relationship. You wanted only to follow your duty and see that I was brought to your idea of justice. I found my pardon papers which you kept from me. You had no intention of giving them to me. Well, I have my pardon papers and I’ll never bother you again. Angelique.”

Raoul pressed a fist to his lips. A soft whimper escaped his mouth. He had lost his chance to express his love to her. Where was she? Had she gone back to Fiji? He packed his belongings and went downstairs to the hotel desk to check out. He asked the clerk if she had seen Angelique. “Yes, Sir. She left over an hour ago.”

“Did she say where she was going?”

“No, Sir. She did not.”

Raoul paid his bill and then caught a boat to the Netherlands. Angelique’s words had crushed his spirit. There was nothing he could do but go home. Now, he must face Berta. An ache rose in the back of his throat. Could he refuse to marry her? Princess Juliana would be disappointed, although it was his life that would suffer if he married this woman. Berta was after a title and position in court. She had been trained to rule and expected him to obey her wishes, but could he? Did he love being the Stadtholder of the Netherlands to the extent that he would sacrifice his heart and soul to a loveless marriage? Sadly, his answer was yes.

Tears poured down. He sat alone in the back of the boat hiding his tears beneath his hat as he feigned sleep. His soul was dying for love . . .

Two guards jerked him onto his feet. “Are you Sir Raoul Rousseau?”

Raoul answered, “Yes, I am.”

One of the guards said, “Sir Robert Cecil requests your presence at his office. It is an emergency. Come with us.” The guards pushed him forward and soon he was in a police wagon seated between the two hefty guards. No one spoke.

Raoul could only imagine why Sir Robert wanted to see him. He promised he would return to see him after Angelique was released although he hadn’t fulfilled that promise. What could possibly be wrong? Raoul laid his head back on the seat and closed his eyes. He didn’t sleep.
